Michael Bastian To Launch Suiting With Barneys

WWD reports that the line will be available mid-February (this month!) but not much more is known at this point.

Michael Bastian, American menswear designer and current CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year is pleased to announce the launch of an exclusive suit, shirt and tie program for Barneys New York. This new line will be carried in 5 Barneys New York stores and on http://www.barneys.com, and is comprised of suits, sport coats, and furnishings. This special collection will be priced approximately 20% lower than the Michael Bastian designer collection (which has been carried in Barneys New York since Spring 2007) and represents a new tier of business for the company — tailored clothing and furnishings with the signature Michael Bastian styling, fit and details, but at a more attainable price point.

Suit retail at $1,495, blazers at $1,150, dress shirts at $265 and ties and bow ties at $165. The tailored clothing fabrications are pure Italian wool or cotton, or a blend of cotton/silk. Shirts are in pure Italian cotton with mother-of-pearl buttons and a modified point collar. The ties are in silk, cotton or linen.

“I was very excited when Tom (Kalendarian) approached me with this idea of an American designer suit/shirt/tie program at a friendlier price point” said Michael Bastian. “Of all the men’s clothing classifications, tailored clothing is the most interesting to me at the moment for a few reasons. There’s a real sea-change happening in this area right now. Now that many men are not required to wear a suit to work, we’re seeing a whole new generation of guys who are approaching the suit in a more modern way — they’re treating it more as a fashion choice than as something they are forced to wear, which changes everything. Ten years ago, if you went to a bar after work, it was the guy in jeans and a casual shirt who stood out in the sea of suits. But now that everyone is wearing more casual clothes to work, it’s the guy in a well-cut suit and tie who really stands out and gets the attention. The suit has evolved from ‘have to wear’ to ‘want to wear’ but it can’t be that anonymous baggy ‘going to work’ suit everyone remembers their fathers wearing. It’s got to have a slim modern fit and the details men expect from a designer line, such as great Italian fabrics, real shirting linings, genuine horn or pearl buttons, and pick stitching along the seams. And the fact that we’re able to offer this at a new opening price makes it even more attractive.” — Michael Bastian

Tom Kalenderian (General Merchandise Manager, Executive VP – Mens & Chelsea Passage) says, “I often think about what business clothes our sportswear clients long for, to complete their wardrobing needs, and it appeared as a void in the market that the young guy with a penchant for hip, modern sportswear from Michael Bastian needed more of a selection that fit their lifestyle. It seemed natural to me that Michael Bastian should be outfitting his client in our stores 24/7, and the dress-up piece was all that was missing. Michael has always had a strong base of tailoring in his sportswear ensemble; it was time to allow the clothing to emerge with authority. We are thrilled to present this collection to the public at Barneys, as it genuinely reflects the heritage of Michael’s aesthetic and literally ‘suits’ the needs of the young businessman.”
